Zootopia,
where
anyone can be anything, and animal instincts and impulses are a thing of the
past. Everyone lives in harmony, until the unthinkable happens. Animals start
going savage! Wait… what? Animals going savage? Obviously in our world that’s
nothing new, animals like lions, tigers, and bears (Oh my!) are creatures that
aren’t exactly friendly, but in the world of Zootopia that’s a different story. In this world, a fox can be a
friend with a bunny and it not be weird.
However, what do we, as humans,
know about and understand nature? Ralph Waldo Emerson says, “[Man’s] relation
to nature, his power over it, is through the understanding; as by manure; the
economic use of fire, wind, water, and the mariner's needle; steam, coal,
chemical agriculture; the repairs of the human body by the dentist and the
surgeon.” I believe he means that our relationship with nature is very
different than that of animals. We are not one with nature like animals are,
though it is believed by some that we evolved from apes. Yes, we use fire,
water, earth, and air to meet our needs like animals do, but when it comes to
healing our bodies we use chemicals and equipment, to fuel our cars and heat
our homes we use fossil fuels (melted down dead animals and such). I wonder
what they used in Zootopia?
Anyway, I think we should
take Emerson’s quote into consideration and respect nature more. Try as we
might, we still aren’t doing our very best to make sure our environment, which
is home to many different creatures, is survivable for future generations of
not only humans but animals as well. Animals in our world are nothing like the
ones in Zootopia. Yes they are able
to survive on their own, but when we meddle in their forests and waters, we’re
actually destroying them. Now, I’m not saying we need to go and turn into Grizzly Man like Timothy Treadwell and
live with the animals, but we do need to take our actions into account. What will
our world become in 40 to 50 years if we don’t start now? The efforts of the
few don’t go as far as the efforts of the many.
