This movie is an obvious and great metaphor for human society. This movie in a lot of ways is about racism. In the film, officer Hops theorizes that the reason predators are going “feral” is linked to biology and their old “natural” instincts. The movie however shows this a backwards thought that is ultimately dangerous and offensive. It may make some sense to us as that audience because it reflects the reality of nature in our world. A panther will naturally try and eat a bunny, it would be weird if they didn’t. Yet, in the context of this film the animals have evolved to have sentience which we cannot forget this is true for us as humans too. I feel the film would say that what separates us from animals, what allows us to reflect and bring peace of mind, to create order and balance over our animalistic instincts is our sentience. We are capable of not being controlled by our baser needs and desires. We can fight them and live however we wish too. The predators are no longer forced to hunt prey and the prey don’t have to live in fear of predators. This doesn’t mean we have completely separated from those old instincts. Humans will still often behave as our old herd instincts taught us. To be wary of what is strange and apart from the accepted group.
Overall, I think that we should aim to separate ourselves more from nature than it feels Emmerson would suggest. We are apart from it and should remain apart. This doesn’t mean we cannot cohabitate with nature. But we should not push ourselves back into the chaotic equilibrium that is nature.
Nick, I really like your point that Zootopia basically symbolizes that "nature is chaos." I never thought about it that way, but I can definitely see it now that I've read your post. It is almost as if every character in Zootopia is trying to avoid the natural way of life. The residents of the city want to completely ignore the predator and prey dynamic. I think it is interesting how the characters think it awful to say that predators have a natural instinct to harm prey, when, in reality, this is the case. In nature, predators do eat prey. I think the fact that the movie criticizes this true element displays that a large overall theme of the movie is that "nature is chaos."
